Special Effects is owned and operated by Frederick Schommer, who has over 25 years of experience in doing design/build landscape and lighting projects. Our projects are innovative and most importantly, tailored to the needs of our clients. This avoids the “one look fits all” trend that seems to be prevalent in today’s environment.

Special Effects has won many accolades and awards over the years and is always a participant in the “Designer’s Show House and Gardens”, the primary fund-raiser for the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.

Our credence is “Simplicity with Elegance”. All great designs start with simplicity. Once this is established in the design process, detail is added giving the finished plan elegance. Listening to the client and having extensive plant knowledge and design skills can make it happen.

Often you will see a landscape that detracts from a home rather than complimenting or enhancing its architecture. The distraction emanates from the landscape being too complex or too many plant varieties having been used. However, this does not mean that designing a complex perennial garden, a cottage garden or a garden circa 1820 is not possible.

The owner feels so strongly that his philosophy is missing in many of today’s landscapes that he has been teaching design classes at a local college for many years in order to educate future landscape designers.
